The Area
Slidell is a city located in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain. With a population of 28,781 according to the 2020 census, Slidell is the largest city in St. Tammany Parish and the sixteenth most populous city in Louisiana. The city sits at the junction of Interstate 10, Interstate 12, and Interstate 59, making it one of the most accessible locations in Louisiana and a gateway between New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Slidell was founded in 1882 during the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad. The town was named after John Slidell, a U.S. Senator and Confederate diplomat to France. Today, Slidell serves as a hub for outdoor recreation, retail, and access to the Honey Island Swamp.
