Madisonville is a historic town in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, located on the west bank of the Tchefuncte River at its confluence with Lake Pontchartrain. The town sits approximately 40 miles north of New Orleans.
As the oldest permanent settlement in St. Tammany Parish, Madisonville maintains its small-town charm while serving as a destination for maritime heritage and waterfront dining. French settlers arrived in the area in 1773 and called it “Coquille” (French for shells). The town was formally established by Jean Baptiste Baham in 1783 and renamed in 1811 to honor President James Madison.
